Use a washer to trace the contour of the fretwork onto the wood you want to use as a backer.
Standing a fretwork piece on edge and tracing around it gives you a custom base.
Using various sizes of fender washers from the hardware store or making your own from thin plywood gives you plenty of sizes to choose from.
